4 teams, 10 days, what could possibly happen?

Why the long break between posts? Well, we’ve been an extremely busy unit.

At the end of 2021, the leader team came up with the idea to run an Explorer Belt expedition to Ireland, starting in Dublin and finishing outside of Tralee in County Kerry. The plan was advertised and, as a result, we have 4 teams undertaking one of the top awards in Scouting.

What is the Explorer Belt?

So what is the Explorer Belt? Well, a quick summary is it’s an expedition through an unfamiliar county over the course of 10 days. During this expedition, you will undertake a project that puts you in contact with the locals, to understand the culture, how things work in that country and to gain valuable life experience. Our four teams are already in the final planning stages with projects ranging from the Irish Language to Gaelic Sports, Myths and Legends and Irish Youth Culture.

These expeditions aren’t without a significant amount of costs, so the unit has also been busy fundraising, from running stalls at local fairs, making sweets and cakes to marshalling sports events we’ve nearly done it and all the pieces are in place.

Departure day is 5th August, we’re hoping there aren’t any planned rail strikes or other national travel obstacles, but being Scouts, we’ll always find a way.

Stay tuned for updates as the expedition progresses in August.
